Our two preferred lighting directions:

1️⃣ Front lit = soft even light
2️⃣ Side lit = subtle shadow drama

Swipe through the shots to see: as we moved around the bathroom our light source changed from side (image 1 & 2) to front (image 3) to side again (image 4) based on where we are in relation to the natural light source: the window.

We typically use & manipulate light through a combination of natural light sources (windows & doors), disk reflectors, long exposures, compositing in post and the occasional simulated light source.

Let’s talk…glares in photos. And how to get rid of them. 🪄

There are two things that go into having soft beautiful light and not having distracting glares: time of day + compositing in postproduction.

Today I want to chat about time of day. It’s crucial that your photographer specializes in interiors and knows exactly when to shoot each room based on the direction of the sun.

When you’re working WITH the sun and not against it, it’s your absolute best light source. And I always say, no one makes better light than God so I work on his schedule. ☀️

But even the best photographer can time it well and still have a glare that disrupts the image. And this is where a good assistant and reflector come into play.

When we took this shot, there were two glass panels in the light fixture that had glares turning them white and lacking detail.

My assistant slowly walked the space with a white light disk (aka a reflector) that can be used to reflect light but also to block it - so I could find where the glare was coming from to remove it IN image capture (not in editing).

It’s also crucial to capture everything in image capture accurately so we can do as little ‘removal editing’ as possible. We composite in the blocked glare exposure instead. This gets you the most realistic image.

This process takes time to do and ultimately more expensive so not all photographers do it.

These are great process questions to ask your photographer so you’re always getting the highest quality images that reflect your high quality design service.
